Well, perhaps Peter Yan losing to Aljamain Sterling via disqualification.

Yan entered the fight as a slight betting favorite over Sterling in what was expected to be the closest fight of the evening. But even after Aljo put on a frenetic pace in Round One, the champion was a -233 betting favorite at the BetOnline App live betting facility. As Yan started to control the fight with Sterling slowing down, he went up by as high as a -4200 favorite at the live betting option of BetOnline. However, he threw it all away with one big mistake.

Knee to a Downed Opponent

Yan threw a blatant knee to a downed Sterling, hitting him in the head. Sterling couldn’t get up, and it appeared like he couldn’t get his head clear. After several minutes of confusion, the referee finally called of the bout upon the advice of the ringside physician. Because Yan’s knee was intentional, it was a disqualification in favor of Sterling. At DraftKings sportsbook, a Sterling win via KO,TKO, of DQ was worth +650, if someone bet on it.

It was a sorry loss for Yan who looked to be in control of the fight. Sterling started out strong, pushing the pace and landing a pair of jumping knees to Yan’s head. Yan rallied and dropped Sterling late in the first round. In the second, Sterling continued to apply the pressure. Yan however, kept his ground and managed to stuff all of Aljo’s takedown attempts.

Beginning round 3, Yan seemed to have found his range and began to pick Sterling apart with slick boxing. In the 4th, Yan landed several hard left and right hands, leading to the disgraceful finish. A look at the judges’ scorecard revealed that Yan was ahead in two of scorecards, 29-28 and was trailing on the third one 29-28.

Not the Way He Wanted To Win

During the post-fight interviews, Sterling told Joe Rogan that it wasn’t wasn’ the way he wanted to win the UFC bantamweight title. Although he was awarded the belt, Sterling threw it away before leaving the octagon. So now, Aljamain Sterling is the new UFC bantamweight champion.

Sterling entered the fight as the UFC’s no.1 ranked bantamweight in the UFC. He had won five straight bouts to burst into title contendership. In his most recent bout, Master Funk submitted no. 2 ranked contender Cory Sandhagen at UFC 250 to earn the first crack at the title which Yan won against Jose Aldo at UFC 251.

Unfortunately for Aljo, he was beginning to fade when the stoppage happened. Sterling started like a house on fire but could not keep up with his own pace Yan started to dominate in the third round and was doing the same in the 4th when the foul was committed. There were stories that it was Yan’s corner who told gave him the instruction to knee Sterling but Yan later clarified he didn’t hear anyone giving out the instruction. Regardless, it cost him the belt and it cost his bettors big bucks.
