Australian Open Betting Preview: 3rd Round – Denis Shapovalov vs. Felix Auger Aliassime – Friday, Feb 12, 2021

Felix Auger Aliassime will face countryman Denis Shapovalov in an all-Canadian duel at Margaret Court Arena for a place in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Both Canadians have ended the Australian Open campaign for two of the host nation’s representatives in the second round and are now on to their fifth head-to-head meeting.

Having won their most recent encounter in the first round of the 2019 US Open – a comfortable 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 victory – Denis Shapovalov boast a 3-1 advantage over Felix Auger Aliassime, whose only victory against Shapovalov was on his favorite clay, while Shapovalov emerged victorious from all of their matches on hard courts.

The winner of their tie will proceed to face either 8th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina or Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev in the fourth round.

Félix Auger-Aliassime Betting Preview

Whereas top-ranked Canadian Denis Shapovalov was the No. 1 player for Team Canada along with Milos Raonic, Steven Diez and Peter Polansky at the ATP Cup, Félix Auger-Aliassime kicked-off his season with a very decent performance at the Murray River Open last week.

The 20-year-old Canadian has recently lost another final (seventh in a row) at the Murray River Open and is yet to win an ATP title in singles, yet Auger-Aliassime remains one of the brightest talents in men’s tennis and should his development continues in this way, it should be only a matter of time until he put his hands on a trophy.

20-th seed Auger-Aliassime started his Australian Open journey with a purpose to mark his best ever performance at Melbourne Park and now hopes to build on.

Starting with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the first round to seal his first ever win at the Australian Open, Auger Aliassime’s form continued in another convincing victory when he eased past Australia’s James Duckworth (6-4, 6-1, 6-2) in the second round.

With another win against Shapovalov, Félix Auger-Aliassime will equal his best ever Grand Slam performance – when he was a performer in the Canadian trio that reached the fourth-round of last year’s US Open.

Denis Shapovalov Betting Preview

Top-ranked Canadian Denis Shapovalov couldn’t influence his team’s performance at the ATP Cup, where he first suffered a 5-7, 5-7 defeat to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, while his second matchup ended up in a 7-6, 3-6, 6-7 defeat against Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

After a strong performance at the US Open Championship only a few months back, Shapovalov returned at the Australian Open and is eager to build on his 2019 performance – when the draw wasn’t really favorable for the young Canadian and he had to leave the competition following a 3-1 defeat to champion Novak Djokovic in the third round.

However, his 2021 campaign almost suffered a setback as early as in the opening round for a second year in a row when Shapovalov survived an exhausting five-setter against the Italian teenage sensation Jannik Sinner at Margaret Court Arena.

Shapovalov snapped Jannik Sinner’s 10-match winning streak with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 comeback victory, thus ending his own six-match losing streak, starting from the 2020 St. Petersburg Open in October.

The 21-year-old Canadian found his best level and rhythm under pressure to hand the Great Ocean Road Open champion his first defeat since last October, firing 62 winners and winning 74% of net points (39/53) to avoid a second successive defeat in the Australian Open first round, after falling in four sets to Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics at the same stage last season.

It was a much needed, hard-fought success that inspired the left-hander’s performance in the next round, where Shapovalov enjoyed a 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 win over former Top 20 player and Australian Davis Cup captain Bernard Tomic.
