  • Borussia Dortmund hold a 3-2 first-leg lead heading into Tuesday’s return fixture at home in Germany
  • Sevilla, currently fourth in Spain’s La Liga, enter the match in a slump, having lost four of their past five games

When it comes to form, neither of these teams got the warmup they were hoping for ahead of Tuesday’s decisive Round of 16, second leg match at Signal Iduna Park in Germany.

Borussia Dortmund had arguably the world’s best team on the ropes in Saturday’s Der Klassiker, after two early Erling Haaland goals gave them a 2-0 lead over Bayern Munich. But a hat trick from Robert Lewandowski ended any hopes of an upset.

Sevilla, meanwhile, went down 2-1 to 17th-placed Elche on Saturday, capping off a forgettable week which also saw them fall 3-0 to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey as the Catalans overturned Sevilla’s 2-0 first-leg lead to move on. Needless to say, after Dortmund’s slim 3-2 win in the first leg of this Champions League tie, both will feel they are in position to put some less-than-stellar results behind them and advance to the quarter-finals.

Disappointment In Dortmund

After the first nine minutes of Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Bayern, it seemed that Dortmund were going to pick up a valuable three points and march into Tuesday’s second leg against Sevilla on the high that comes with beating the all-conquering world club champions.

But then Lewandowski did Lewandowski things, and Bayern won 4-2 to leave Dortmund disappointed and languishing in sixth place in the league table. Now, interim coach Edin Terzic will have to rally his team and make sure his players respond positively in Tuesday’s crucial last-16 second leg against Sevilla.

On the positive side, Dortmund does have the benefit of scoring three times in Seville, so even a 1-0 loss would see the German side through on away goals. But Signal-Iguna Park has been anything but a fortress in the Champions League Round of 16, with the team sporting an all-time record of three wins and three losses at its home stadium.

Unfamiliar Foes

Dortmund and Sevilla have only met on one other occasion in European soccer. In the 2010-11 Europa League group stage, Sevilla picked up a 1-0 victory in Dortmund, before drawing 2-2 back at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

In addition to being its first victory over Sevilla, the German club’s win in Spain two weeks ago was just its third victory in its last 11 knockout matches in European competition. However, Dortmund will enter the return leg buoyed by continental form, having won nine of their last 14 European matches, with none of the four defeats over that span coming at home. Even better, the team has won five of its last six home matches in UEFA competitions.

On the other hand, Sevilla have proven hard to beat away from home in the Champions League, going six games since their last defeat on the road, back in 2017. However, games on the road in the tournament’s Round of 16 have proven to be a stumbling block in the past, with the Andalusian club winning just one of its four away games at this stage.

Haaland Humming

Dortmund’s danger man will need little introduction to Sevilla, or the world of soccer in general. In addition to the pair of goals he had against Bayern on Saturday, the Norwegian youngster grabbed a pair in the first leg against Sevilla and is the leading scorer in this season’s Champions League with eight. He has now scored 29 goals in 28 appearances this season.

However, he was subbed off in Saturday’s game after picking up a slight ankle injury, and Terzic was in no mood to risk further damage. Dortmund will be hoping he is fully fit for Tuesday, particularly with the club already missing Jadon Sancho and Raphael Guerreiro.

Expect Changes For Sevilla

Sevilla manager Julian Lopetegui is likely to make a number of changes to his lineup for Tuesday’s game after the team’s recent run of poor form. Aleix Vidal is out with a hamstring injury, while Yassine Bounou remains a doubt for the starting lineup after a picking up a knock in recent games.
