- UFC President Dana White wants to book Colby Covington vs Leon Edwards.
- Edwards was left without a fight after Khamzat Chimaev pulled out of their March 13 bout.
- Covington is the UFC’s no. 2 ranked welterweight contender.
With Khamzat Chimaev pulling out of his fight win Leon Edwards yet again, UFC President Dana White thinks that it might be best to give Edwards, the right fight he deserves.
That right fight is a showdown against former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington. Covington is currently ranked 2nd in the UFC’s 170-pound rankings while Edwards is no. 3. Fighting the 15th ranked Chimaev was a no-win situation for Edwards. But fighting Covington is the right step in trying to move up the ladder and earning a title shot.
Chimaev Pulls Out Again
The bout between Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards is off again, Dana White told @bokamotoESPN.

Chimaev rose to instant UFC stardom when he fought and won two bouts in different weight classes during a 10 day period. He later set th modern day record for the fastest three-fight winning streak at 66 fights. But since that unbelievable run, he’s been incredibly difficult to put back inside the Octagon.
The Chechnyan was originally slated to fight Edwards on December 19th but the latter tested positive for COVID-19 and the bout was moved to January 20th. Chimaev then tested positive for COVID-19 and the second schedule was once again moved to March 13th. However, Chimaev is still reportedly suffering from lingering health issues, forcing the fight to be put on hold again.
This time around, it appears that the UFC is moving on from the fight. With still no date of return for the 15th ranked Chimaev, UFC President Dana White is eyeing to give Edwards a fight that will likely earn him a title shot if he wins.

In a recent interview, White says that the promotion is looking at booking Edwards with a showdown against the UFC’s no. 2 ranked welterweight contender, Colby Covington. Chaos is fresh off a TKO win over former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley last September 2020 and has won seven out of his last eight bouts.
The 32-year old Covington won the interim UFC welterweight title by defeating Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 225. After he was stripped of the interim belt, Covington challenged Kamaru Usman for the undisputed title at UFC 245, losing that bout via 5th round TKO. He however, bounced back with a one-sided beatdown of Woodley.
Edwards meanwhile, has not fought since defeating Dos Anjos in July 2019. He turned down a chance to fight Usman last year due to travel and training restrictions. But the no. 3 ranked welterweight has won his last eight bouts and has been dominant since losing to Usman in 2015. And like Covington, he is equally deserving of a title shot so why not let the two of them dispute the no. 1 contender spot?
