The Djoker tore an abdominal muscle in the third round, and wasn’t even sure if he would play on. Entering the final, he had conceded a total of five sets in the tournament, the most sets he’s ever dropped en route to a Grand Slam final. And it didn’t help that he was facing an opponent who carried a 20-match winning streak to the final. None of those mattered.
Using relentless returning, baseline excellence, and an improved serve, Djokovic rolled to his third straight Australian Open title, and 9th Melbourne Grand Slam overall, by defeating no. 4 Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. The 33-year old Serbian improved to 18-0 when playing in the semifinals and final of the Australian Open. It’s another Grand Slam won by Tennis’ Big Three.
The Big Three of Tennis
The Big Three have now won 57 of the last 68 majors, so it’s safe to say they’ll continue to captivate.

57 out of the last 68 tennis Grand Slams have been won by either Federer, Nadal, or Dojokovic. Federer and Nadal lead the way, each with 20 tennis Majors ( only 19 for Federer during this 68 grand slam span ) under their belts. With his win on Monday, Djokovic moved closer to them with his 18. He will also break Federer’s record for most weeks as world number 1.
Djokovic’s 9 Australian Open men’s singles titles are a record in Melbourne. It’s also broke a tie with Roger Federer’s 8 Wimbledon wins for the second most times a player has won a single tennis Grand Slam tournament, behind only Rafael Nadal’s 13 French Open titles.

Federer and Nadal are the top names in the tennis GOAT conversation but Djokovic has certainly entered the discussion with his 18th Grand Slam title while still going strong as the world’s no. 1 ranked tennis player. Unlike other sports, the tennis GOAT discussion is like a rodeo. And it continues at the French Open where Nadal is the betting favorite at the best tennis betting sites.
2020 ended with Dominic Thiem winning the U.S. Open. Some said that could mark the end of the Big Three era in tennis. But just when the Doubting Thomases began to sprout, Djokovic silenced them with an emphatic 9th win at the Australian Open. Let’s see what Nadal does next at Roland Garros.
