Virtual Broward job fair offered for unemployed hospitality and retail workers

Unemployed hotel and retail workers will get a chance to return to their industries as CareerSource Broward, the job search and placement assistance agency, sponsors a virtual job fair on Tuesday, March 23.

A number of local hotels and retailers with job openings will participate. They include the Riverside Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale Marriot Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, Burlington Coat Factory, W Fort Lauderdale and Encompass Onsite.

The job openings include housekeepers, host/hostesses, maintenance technicians, customer service workers, bartenders, cooks and others.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.

Job seekers can participate in the fair from their homes online or by visiting their nearest CareerSource Broward career center, which will have desktop computers available for those who lack access to the internet.

During the event, potential applicants can visit employer “booths,” review job descriptions, apply for open positions and chat virtually with company representatives.

The fair is free, but the agency requires participants to pre-register. To do so, visit

“Broward County’s hospitality and retail sectors were especially hit hard as a result of the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic,” said Carol Hylton, president and CEO of CareerSource Broward, said in a statement Friday.

“Now that the economy has started to recover and businesses are reopening, we are proactively taking steps to ensure that our hotels, restaurants and retail shops have the ability to recruit the talent they need as quickly as possible,” she said.

The state’s unemployment rate declined to 4.8% for January while Broward County’s stood at 5.3%, an increase from the month before.

But South Florida hoteliers have reported shortages in qualified workers as they rebuild their businesses from the damage caused by the COVD-19 pandemic.
